About Banking

To manage your money well you have to find a system that works for you. Most of us need “basic banking” services. This could include cashing checks, paying bills and depositing extra money in a safe place. In the past, banks didn’t always offer convenient access to your money. Many people still use check cashers because they offer longer hours and more predictable fees.

The good news is that times are changing. In the last few years options for managing your money have improved dramatically. You don’t have to choose between the convenience of check cashing and the safety of a bank anymore. Some banks are offering the convenience of check-cashers and bill payment centers, as well as the safety of a traditional bank. Some are working with retail stores and even check cashers to offer new services and convenience.

In addition, some banks are beginning to offer prepaid cards. These are like debit cards: you put your paycheck into an account and access your money through a card you can use at stores and ATMs. Prepaid cards are an easy, cash-free way to shop.

These cards work like checking accounts. When you pay with your card, the amount is subtracted from your account and transferred electronically to the person or business you’re buying from. You use a Personal Identification Number (PIN) or sign a receipt to approve these transactions. You can also use your card at an ATM to get cash.

Some prepaid cards have advantages over checking accounts -- for example many have low bounced check fees. Also some (but not all) of these cards also offer insurance on deposits and protection if you lose your card.
